A homemade Magic 8 Ball is a twenty-sided die floating in a dark liquid behind a window, and the whole craft turns on one detail nobody warns you about: an ordinary d20 sinks in water. Fix that and the rest is a black paint job. Below is the full build, the salt-water recipe that makes the die float, a five-minute paper version for younger children, and what to do when the liquid goes cloudy.
What you need
- A clear fillable plastic bauble, 80-100 mm, the two-halves kind sold for ornaments. Glass works and looks better; plastic survives being dropped.
- A 20-sided die (a d20 from any dice set). White or pale, so the writing reads.
- Table salt - a surprising amount of it, roughly 350 g per litre of water.
- Distilled water if you have hard tap water. It is the difference between clear liquid and a permanent haze.
- Blue or black food colouring, one or two drops only.
- Matte black acrylic paint or spray, white paint for the 8, and a circle of masking tape or a vinyl sticker to reserve the window.
- A fine permanent marker, and clear silicone or superglue for the seam.
The problem: your die will sink
Acrylic and resin dice have a density of about 1.15-1.20 g/cm³. Water is 1.00, so the die goes straight to the bottom and stays there. The real toy solves this with a hollow icosahedron in dyed alcohol - the internals are covered in what is inside a Magic 8 Ball. At home you solve it from the other side: make the liquid heavier than the die.
Saturated salt water reaches about 1.20 g/cm³, which is just enough. Stir table salt into warm water until no more will dissolve, then test with your actual die before you commit:

If the die still sinks, it is a dense resin one; swap it for a lighter hollow d20, or add corn syrup a spoonful at a time until it rises. If it shoots up too fast, cut the mix with a little plain water. A drop or two of glycerine thickens everything and gives you the slow, deliberate surfacing the real toy has.

The twenty answers
Write one on each face with a fine permanent marker, then leave it to dry for a full day - marker ink that has not cured will bleed into the liquid and turn it grey. The build, step by step
- Mask the window. Stick a coin-sized circle of tape or vinyl on one half of the bauble. That circle is the only part that stays clear.
- Paint the outside. Two or three thin coats of matte black, letting each dry. Thin coats matter - one thick coat runs and stays tacky for days.
- Add the 8. A white circle on the side opposite the window, with a black 8 once the white is dry.
- Mix the liquid. Warm water, salt stirred in until it stops dissolving, one or two drops of colouring. Let it stand until it is clear and at room temperature.
- Filter it. Pour through a coffee filter. This catches the undissolved salt that otherwise drifts around inside forever.
- Fill and float. Drop in the die, then top the bauble up to the brim. Air is what makes a homemade ball froth; the real one has one small bubble and no more.
- Seal. Clear silicone or superglue round the seam, held shut, left overnight. Do not shake it before the seal has fully cured.
- Peel the mask and check the die surfaces into the window when you turn it over.
The five-minute paper version
No liquid, no drying time, and it works for a classroom of thirty. Fold a paper fortune teller, write eight of the twenty answers inside instead of colours, and it does the same job. A printable cube with six answers works too, and so does a paper cup with twenty folded slips in it - shake, draw one, put it back. The mechanism is irrelevant; what makes it a Magic 8 Ball is that the answers are fixed in advance and drawn at random, which is all the original does.

Troubleshooting
The liquid is cloudy
Either undissolved salt or minerals from hard tap water. Empty it, remix with distilled water, and filter through a coffee filter before it goes back in. Cloudiness that appears weeks later is usually marker ink that had not cured, or algae from sunlight - keep it off the windowsill.
It is full of froth
It was not filled to the brim. Top it up until the liquid domes slightly above the rim, then close it; a single small bubble is normal and actually helps the die move.
The die spins too fast to read
The liquid is too thin. Add glycerine or a little clear corn syrup, a spoonful at a time.
It leaks at the seam
Superglue does not like salt water over time. Re-seal with clear silicone, which stays flexible, and give it a full 24 hours.
Safety
Salt water is harmless but tastes appalling, so seal it properly and keep the finished ball away from toddlers. Skip the alcohol the commercial toy uses - it is unnecessary here and makes a spill a real problem. Paint and glue with a window open, and let a child do the folding version rather than the sealing.
